MALCon fans have been asking for a focus on the Dresden Files for a few years, and this year we’re doing it in style, bringing in the creator of the curmudgeonly yet well-loved wizard private investigator. Now if only we can get Main Events to look like McAnally’s Pub…

2016 Jim Butcher-Headshot-small

Jim Butcher is the author of the Dresden Files, the Codex Alera, and a new steampunk series, the Cinder Spires. His resume includes a laundry list of skills which were useful a couple of centuries ago, and he plays guitar quite badly. An avid gamer, he plays tabletop games in varying systems, a variety of video games on PC and console, and LARPs whenever he can make time for it. Jim currently resides mostly inside his own head, but his head can generally be found in his home town of Independence, Missouri.

Keith R.A. DeCandido has written a metric buttload of fiction over the past two decades, which is slightly less than an imperial buttload. Recent and upcoming work includes the Marvel’s Tales of Asgard trilogy of novels starring Thor (Dueling with Giants), Sif (Even Dragons Have Their Endings), and the Warriors Three (Godhood’s End); the Stargate SG-1 novel Kali’s Wrath; new novellas in the Super City Police Department series of cop stories set in a city filled with superheroes; Mermaid Precinct, the fifth novel in his series of fantasy police procedurals; A Furnace Sealed, the debut novel of his urban fantasy series about a nice Jewish boy from the Bronx who wrangles monsters; the Heroes Reborn novella Save the Cheerleader, Destroy the World; the graphic novel Icarus, an adaptation of the novel by Gregory A. Wilson; the short story collection Without a License: The Fantastic Worlds of Keith R.A. DeCandido; and short fiction in the online magazines Story of the Month Club and Buzzy Mag, and the anthologies The X-Files: Trust No One, V-Wars: Night Terrors, Alternate Sherlocks, Altered States of the Union, The Side of Good/The Side of Evil, and Nights of the Living Dead (co-edited by George Romero). In 2009, he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Media Tie-in Writers, which means he never needs to achieve anything ever again. His rewatches of classic TV shows (various series in the Star Trek and Stargate franchises, as well as the 1966 Batman) have been appearing twice weekly on Tor.com since 2011. He’s also a professional musician (currently the percussionist for the parody band Boogie Knights), an editor of more than 25 years’ standing (working for clients both corporate and private), a second-degree black belt in karate (which he teaches to both children and adults), and probably some other stuff that he can’t remember due to the lack of sleep.
